Knee Pain Treatment in Singapore
Knee pain affects your ability to walk, climb stairs, sleep, and get through a normal day. For many patients, the frustration is not just the pain itself — it is not knowing what is causing it, or being told the only option is surgery.
At Singapore Paincare, we assess the actual source of your pain before recommending any treatment. Many patients leave with a non-surgical plan they did not expect was possible.
What Causes Knee Pain?
Knee pain can come from several sources, and identifying the right one is what makes the difference between temporary relief and lasting recovery.
| Causes | |
|---|---|
| Knee Osteoarthritis | The most common cause of knee pain in adults over 50. Cartilage in the joint gradually wears down, causing pain, stiffness, and swelling — especially when walking, climbing stairs, or rising from a chair. [→ Learn more about Knee osteoarthritis] |
| Meniscus Tear | A tear in the cushioning cartilage of the knee, often caused by twisting or squatting movements. Symptoms include locking, clicking, and sharp pain on the inner or outer side of the knee. [→ Learn more about Knee meniscus tear] |
| Ligament Injuries (including ACL) | Caused by sudden stops, pivots, or direct impact — common in sport. The knee may feel unstable, swell quickly, or be painful to bear weight on. |
| Runner’s Knee (Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome) | Pain around or behind the kneecap from muscle imbalance or overuse. Worsens with stairs, running, cycling, or prolonged sitting. |
| Rheumatoid Arthritis | An autoimmune condition causing joint inflammation, warmth, and swelling. Often affects both knees. Pain can flare unpredictably. [→ Learn more about Rheumatoid arthritis] |
| Nerve-Driven Knee Pain | Some knee pain has no structural cause on a scan. It is driven by nerve hypersensitivity or referred pain from the lower back. Standard treatments often miss this — the Painostic® method is designed to identify it. |

Not sure what’s causing your knee pain?
With our Painostic® approach, our pain specialists go beyond surface symptoms to identify the real source of your knee pain. Through a detailed clinical assessment and targeted diagnostics, we develop a personalised treatment plan focused on relieving pain, restoring movement, and preventing recurrence.
How is Knee Pain Diagnosed?
Most knee pain assessments rely on scans. The problem is that scans show structural changes, but not always whether those changes are actually causing your pain.
The Painostic® Approach
Painostic® is Singapore Paincare’s proprietary, trademarked diagnostic and treatment methodology, developed by our founder Dr. Bernard Lee Mun Kam over more than 20 years of clinical practice. It goes beyond imaging to assess your pain across four dimensions and follows a structured three-protocol process to turn that assessment into an accurate, targeted treatment plan.
Diagnostic Formulation
A multi-dimensional assessment that examines both the theoretical and practical aspects of your pain. It differentiates mechanical causes (structural damage, joint wear) from functional causes (nerve sensitisation, referred pain). It also considers referred pain pathways — so pain that appears to come from the knee but originates elsewhere is not missed.
Injection Roadmap
A structured, evidence-based framework for selecting the most appropriate minimally invasive procedure for your specific pain source. It combines injection therapy, physical rehabilitation, and medication into a coherent, sequenced plan — rather than treating each symptom in isolation.
Injection Technique
A refined method for determining needle depth and optimal placement, ensuring medication is delivered precisely to the affected anatomical structure. Image guidance is used throughout to maximise accuracy and safety.
The result is a treatment plan that targets the right cause, in the right place, at the right time — not a best guess based on a scan report alone.
What Are the Treatment Options for Knee Pain in Singapore?
Conservative Treatment
For most knee pain conditions, conservative treatment is the right starting point. Rest, medication, and physiotherapy help many patients recover — and at Singapore Paincare, we support this approach as part of a complete care plan.
- Rest and Activity Modification Reducing or temporarily stopping activities that aggravate your knee allows inflamed or injured tissue to settle. Your specialist may advise switching from high-impact activities — such as running or jumping — to lower-impact alternatives like swimming or cycling while your knee recovers.
- Pain Medication Over-the-counter NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen or naproxen help reduce pain and swelling in the short term. Your doctor may prescribe stronger anti-inflammatory medication or pain relief depending on your condition and medical history.
- Physiotherapy and Exercise A structured physiotherapy programme strengthens the muscles around the knee — particularly the quadriceps and hip stabilisers — which reduces load on the joint and improves stability. Stretching, gait correction, and targeted strengthening exercises are the most effective long-term conservative strategy for most knee conditions.
- Supportive Devices Knee braces, compression supports, and shoe insoles can reduce load on the affected part of the joint and improve comfort during daily activities. These are typically used alongside other treatment, not as a standalone solution.
- Weight Management Every kilogram of body weight adds approximately four kilograms of force across the knee joint with each step. For patients who are overweight, even modest weight loss can significantly reduce knee pain and slow the progression of osteoarthritis.
Minimally Invasive Procedures
Conservative treatment works well for many patients. But if your knee pain has persisted for more than a few weeks despite rest, medication, and physiotherapy — or if it is getting worse — it may be a sign that the underlying cause has not been identified or adequately addressed. That is where the Painostic® assessment and minimally invasive treatment options become relevant.
Myospan® Injections
Myospan injections target the muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and nerves around the knee to break the pain cycle, reduce inflammation, and support healing.
Neurospan
When knee pain is driven by nerve sensitivity rather than joint damage, Neurospan therapies address the overactive nerves directly.
Do You Need Surgery for Knee Pain?
Most patients who come to us with knee pain do not need surgery — at least not immediately, and often not at all.
Minimally invasive procedures work well for mild to moderate conditions: osteoarthritis in its early to moderate stages, tendon and ligament injuries, nerve-driven knee pain, and inflammatory conditions that have not responded to physiotherapy or medication.
Surgery such as knee replacement is generally considered for severe, end-stage joint damage. If you are at that stage, our specialists will tell you honestly. But for most patients, there is a non-surgical pathway worth exploring first.
| Minimally Invasive Procedures | Physiotherapy | Knee Surgery | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Mild to moderate pain; early to moderate arthritis; nerve pain | Muscle weakness; early overuse injuries | Severe structural damage; end-stage arthritis |
| Setting | Outpatient | Clinic or home | Hospital |
| Recovery | Days to weeks | Weeks to months | Weeks to months |
| Anaesthesia | Local only | None | General |
When Should You See a Knee Pain Specialist?
Seek an assessment if you have any of the following:
- Knee pain lasting more than two to three weeks without improvement
- Swelling that is unexplained or not settling with rest
- A knee that locks, clicks, or gives way
- Difficulty climbing stairs, walking, or rising from a chair
- Pain that wakes you at night
- Pain after a fall, sport injury, or sudden twisting movement
Early assessment gives you more non-surgical options and helps prevent further joint deterioration.
